As you are likely aware the BSW general assembly (which will ask whether or not students want to renew the strike) will take place Monday at 9h30 in the Wilson Hall Basement. We would like to appeal to everyone to get out and vote (whether you are for the strike or not) on this truly historic motion. The vote was somewhat close last time, and many students that voted felt divided on whether or not to abide by the conclusion. Unfortunately, many students who voted ‘no’ have chosen to cross picket lines, even when professors have indicated no sanctions would be implemented for students abiding by the strike. The strikers have by and large been respectful of students that crossed, and students that attended class this week have by and large been respectful of the strikers. We want to commend everyone--not from a position of superiority--but from genuine admiration, of the way students on both sides have conducted themselves during this intensely stressful week. Although there have been some rough points, We think we have all learned a lot through these issues, and we hope we continue to do so, no matter the outcome of the GA.
We, as SWSA, are committed to respecting any decision that students make at the GA. As students and as representatives, we hate to see the polarization and division among our peers--whom we have deep respect for. To that end we have decided to implement a secret ballot method of voting, rather than the handheld card voting system often used at GAs. We feel that this will help reduce tension among students and make people feel more comfortable with voting.
However, it must be said that the strike question will continue to divide students so long as we let it. It is our opinion that the outcome of the GA would be less likely to divide students if it is truly representative of how students feel on this issue. The more people that turn out and vote their conscience, the more likely that a strike mandate will be respected, or that students will feel represented in the decision not to continue the strike. So please, take an hour of your time to commit to a process that should democratically represent students. Again, the GA will be held at 9h30 on Monday morning in the basement of Wilson Hall.
