The Social Work Student Association would like to formally ask you to vote "YES" for QPIRG!
The current SSMU referendum on the existence of QPIRG (The Quebec Public Interest Research Group) is especially important to social work students. Many of our fellow students are actively involved in and benefit from QPIRG. QPIRG's Community-University Research Exchange has helped many social work students gain valuable research skills while also aiding community organizations. Additionally, social work students are involved with organizing in some of QPIRG's working groups KANATA and the Filipino Solidarity Collective, among others. QPIRG brings us Social Justice Days, Culture Shock, Rad Frosh and many more events. QPIRG has been, and continues to be, a driving force behind nearly every progressive initiative started on campus-- from paper recycling to campus crops to fair trade coffee. Therefore, to SWSA, QPIRG represents an organization that is dedicated to improving the lives of students, community members, and future social workers.
The current referendum asks students to renew the funding structure already in place (a fee of 3.75$ opt-outable on Minerva). While not perfect, the current system of funding allows for QPIRG to continue to function for the coming years. Without this semi-stable funding, QPIRG's very existence is at risk. We strongly support everyone to vote "yes" to keep this institution running! QPIRG needs student support fees to survive, and we believe students also need QPIRG as part of their campus community to survive.
What is McGill really if it doesn't have this important organization that links the McGill bubble to the Montreal community? Not a place we'd like to spend a whole lot of time in! Therefore, we strongly encourage you to vote "Yes" for your campus community and vote "Yes" for QPIRG !
Voting starts on April 10th ends on Monday April 16th. Vote ASAP by following this link: http://ovs.ssmu.mcgill.ca!!
