SWSA from 2011-2012 Thanks You for a Great Year!

We would like to thank you for an excellent year, and to take some time to summarize what SWSA has done this year to serve you. It's been a busy busy year as always for all social work students, but particularly for SWSA executives. To recap, this year SWSA has:

  • Encouraged record participation in U1/Y1 orientation with new an innovative activities, along with a successful BBQ on James Terrace
  • Participated in a series of job talks where we asked questions on teaching that helped hire a new faculty member
  • Co-partnered with CRARR to organize a panel on racial profiling, including participation from the SPVM, Batshaw, and the commission des droits de la personne et des droits de la jeunesse
  • Implemented an online book sales database
  • Organized a large group of students to partake in Montreal Walks for Mental Health for the first time ever
  • Had regular class announcements, newsletters, and listserv emails
  • Implemented regular social media and web presence, including a new facebook page and blog
  • Held the town hall and implemented new student consultation groups
  • Informed students about the tuition hikes through information sessions, and organizing the General Assemblies
  • Organized a week long training for students with Suicide Action Montreal
  • Held the annual sweatshirt sale
  • Helped organize the Career Fair with CaPS
  • Represented students on the BSW planning committee on a monthly basis
  • Represented students through SSMU council, the presidents roundtable, and the academic roundtable
  • Sought information about joining AUS, and helped clarify this process for next year's council
  • Held pub nights, a movie night, and two potluck events
  • Helped with a fundraiser for the famine in North Africa
  • Helped organize a discussion on the anniversary of Canada's awarding of the Nansen medal for Refugee Policy
  • Held SWSA elections in fall and winter
  • Advocated for support around field placements for students, resulting in the student support groups facilitated by Kim Coleman and Shawn-Renee Hordyck
  • Endorsed all CKUT and QPIRG referendum questions and campaigned for each
  • Partnered with KANATA to bring awareness around Indigenous Studies at McGill
  • Helped clarify the process regarding the upcoming CASWE accreditation process and how students voices have been involved and can continue to be involved
  • Selected a representative for the CASWE annual conference, to represent students in schools of social work

We feel like this has been an amazing year for student participation in our small school. Almost consistently, one-third of our students showed up to the General Assemblies (GAs) and made their voices heard. The debates at the GAs were incredibly informed and well reasoned. We heard numerous comments from our seasoned GA volunteers that SWSA’s GAs were some of the most respectful and insightful GAs that they had attended. Even though the strike was a difficult and often times dividing process, we feel that overall students were remarkably composed, respectful, and calm during this time. SWSA certainly learned a lot about organizing, representation, democracy, and the tensions inherent in all of those concepts. We hope that all students took the opportunity to learn from this process as well.

In conclusion, throughout this challenging and busy year we have learned so much about all the students and their interests. We very much enjoyed working with all of you, and hope that you feel we represented your interests well. Thank you all so much for a making it a wonderful year. Congratulations to all whom are graduating.

Best,
The Social Work Student Association
